Hamilton Elementary/Middle School (HEMS) has a proud history of educational excellence. Our students consistently exceeded the federal and state expectations for adequate yearly progress with more than 75% of our students earning proficient or advanced on both the reading and math sections of the Maryland State Assessment. Moreover, our student population reflects the economic, linguistic, and racial diversity of the greater Hamilton Community of Northeast Baltimore. Working in cooperation with families, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to attain an excellent education. An Arts & STEM School
Located at 6101 Old Harford Road in the 21214 zip code, HEMS is a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Pre-K to 8 school nestled in the Hamilton neighborhood in Northeast Baltimore. Much of our success is due to our strong community and parental support, and to a faculty and staff that is dedicated to academic rigor, high expectations, and the belief in the value and ability of every child to learn at high levels.
Our ingenuity program is one of only three Gifted and Talented middle school programs in the district. And from our award winning choir, band and chess programs, to our elective programs including the community garden, technology/yearbook, physical fitness, French, and art, there is something for everyone at HEMS.
Hamilton welcomes students of all abilities and cultural backgrounds, and we prepare them to enter the best high schools in the area and the best colleges around the country. We will not stop until we are sure that we are preparing every student to gain the skills and knowledge necessary for success in the 21st Century.
This October Hamilton Elementary Middle School along with Hamilton-Lauraville Healthy Neighborhoods hosted a Middle School Leadership Conference for student leaders in 12 Baltimore City Schools. You can see what 5th graders thru 8th graders learned at the conference.

Hamilton Elementary Middle Receives EGATE School Award January 2016
It gives me great pleasure to inform you that both Hampstead Hill Academy and Hamilton Elementary/Middle School have qualified for the 2015 Maryland Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) school award. The EGATE application process required school teams to reflect upon and document the ways in which the school’s gifted and talented education program is aligned with the Maryland Criteria for Excellence: Gifted and Talented Education Program Guidelines.
This year, the Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education reviewed EGATE applications from across the state and identified six schools which qualified as EGATE schools. Schools that earn the EGATE designation will
- receive a Governor’s citation and a citation from the Maryland State Department of Education;
- be recognized at a statewide reception on February 24, 2016 (invitation attached);
- display the Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) school banner;
- appear on the MSDE website as an Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) school;
- host celebratory EGATE visits from members of the Maryland State Department of Education and the State Advisory Council for Gifted and Talented Education; and
- serve as a model and resource to other schools planning to achieve the EGATE status.
Once again, congratulations on having Hampstead Hill Academy and Hamilton Elementary/Middle School both qualify for the Maryland Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) school award. As we continue to emphasize rigor for all students, it is essential that we focus on developing high quality gifted and talented education programs.
